Here are some disturbing facts concerning Commercially Manufactured Pet Food:

  • U.S. Federal law permits the sale of condemned meat as pet food. “Condemned Meat” refers to meat classified as unfit for human consumption.
  • Many commercial pet food plants use meat by-products. This means parts not fit for human consumption like feathers, feet, heads, ligaments, blood bones, intestines and diseased organs.
  • Meat & “Meal” Products are meats processed at high temperatures that “denature” protein. It destroys the amino acids that make up protein. They are therefore poorly digested and provide little nutritive value.
  • Pet Food Manufacturers are not required to test raw materials.
  • Usually poor quality meat scraps with only a small portion of meat left on the bone is known as meat labelling.
  • 4-D Animals (Dead, Dying, diseased & Disabled) can be found in commercially manufactured pet food. These are banned from human consumption and are still legally allowed in pet food.
  • Rendering is the process of taking meat and meat by-products, including condemned meats, and cooking then processing them at high temperatures. This is then processed to separate grease from raw materials. This material is finely ground and the end product is meat meal.
  • Condemned Grains aka moldy grains (wheat, corn, etc.) are not fit for human consumption yet can be found in your dog’s kibble. They contain harmful myotoxins that end up in pet food.Is it any wonder why so many dogs are now “allergic” to grains?

Think your dog is healthy because he is only getting kibble made from ‘natural’ products? Are you sure about that?

A government definition of “natural”: “A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification, extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation but not having been produced or subject to chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as may occur unavoidably in good manufacturing processes.”

So this means that the rendering process mentioned above is not only acceptable, but it is considered “natural.”

Dead, diseased and dying animals are considered ‘natural’ when it comes to feeding our best friends. Perhaps if we made these things that are acceptable for the feed official’s meals they would have a different opinion!

The disheartening picture to the right is a common sight at many rendering plants.

If you are feeding your dog a food with “meal” as one of the ingredients, you may be unwittingly poisoning your dog.

You never have to worry about any of the above in our pre-cooked, GMO-free Lucky Dog Cuisine meals. Check out our recipes page where we openly display our ingredients and even make recommendations on which healthy food choices may be best for your lucky dog!

Also found in commercial dog foods:

Heavy metals • Antibiotics • Bacteria (e-coli, salmonella, etc.) • Drugs (ex. Pentobarbital) • Pesticides • Fertilizers • Hormones

Yes, your pet’s foods are “fortified” with vitamins and minerals. It really means these things are added due to the basic raw materials being so unwholesome. The quality of the raw materials in kibble recipes are extremely variable and the harsh manufacturing processes destroy nutrients.

Is your dog a cannibal?

Persistent rumors that meat and bone meal contained euthanized animals prompted the FDA to do a study. The result showed that the euthanizing drug pentobarbital was found in pet food. It was found in meat, bone meal and generic animal fat.

Did you know that after dry dog food goes through the extrusion process it has so few nutrients left that traditional commercial dog food manufacturers have to add vitamins and minerals back in to give it some form of nutritional value?

In addition they spray it with the fat removed during the rendering process in order to make it palatable for the dog to eat.

You should probably be wearing a contamination suit just handling the stuff, why let your dog eat it?
Please remember, if you wouldn’t eat it please don’t feed it to your dog! There is a reason we all go “eeeuuuwww!” when we see a person taste dog food.

Quick (but still scary) Facts

  • Since the proliferation of commercial dog food in the last 40 years, the life span of dogs have shortened by roughly 18%
  • Aside from automobile related accidents, cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs with roughly one in four dogs die of cancer. When humans contract cancer one of the first forms of treatment is to remove all processed foods from their diet. You should do the same for your dog but don’t wait until they get cancer. Start feeding whole foods today.
  • Did you know that in the course of a year an average 50 pound dog will ingest about 18 pounds of preservatives when eating traditional commercial food? Prevent this with Lucky Dog’s healthy pre-cooked dog food.
  • In the USA a dog is diagnosed with cancer every five seconds! Don’t let your lucky dog become part of this statistic.

The use of Presciption dog food is one of my pet peeves and shows that the
phrase “Marketing over Mother Nature’ holds true.
If you are a dog owner, you may have heard about the class action suit
against prescription dog foods. Hills, Science Diet, Royal Canin and Purina
are some of the brands that are accused of misleading consumers and
veterinarians about the benefits and ingredients of their products. The
lawsuit claims that:

  • these companies charge premium prices for prescription dog foods that are not significantly different from regular dog foods. In fact, they are made in the same facilities, using the same suppliers as low-quality grocery store brands like Alpo and Beneful.
  • they do not have any scientific evidence to support their claims of treating or preventing various health conditions in dogs. They are not made in facilities that follow traditional drug manufacturing protocols.
  • that these companies have violated consumer protection laws and engaged in false advertising.

The class action suit was filed in 2019 by a group of dog owners who purchased prescription dog foods from these brands for their pets. They are seeking refunds, damages and an injunction to stop the companies from selling prescription dog foods without proper authorization and
disclosure
. The suit is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Prescription dog foods are supposed to be specially formulated to address specific health issues in dogs, such as kidney disease, diabetes, allergies, obesity and more. However, according to the lawsuit, these products are not
regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any other agency,
and they do not require a prescription from a veterinarian to be sold.

The lawsuit claims that these companies have exploited this loophole to market their products as prescription dog foods, even though they are not approved or tested by any authority.

This suit also accuses these companies of using low-quality ingredients and fillers in their prescription dog foods, such as corn, wheat, soy, by-products and artificial colors and flavors. These ingredients may not only be ineffective for treating or preventing health conditions in dogs, but they may also cause adverse reactions and allergies in some dogs. The lawsuit cites several examples of dogs that suffered from health problems after
consuming prescription dog foods from these brands, such as vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, skin infections, kidney failure and death.

The lawsuit seeks to hold these companies accountable for their deceptive and unlawful practices, and to provide compensation and relief to the dog owners who have been harmed by them. It also aims to protect the public interest and the welfare of dogs by ensuring that prescription dog foods are properly regulated and labeled, and that consumers and veterinarians are informed about their benefits and risks.

Please be aware that the FDA does not review or verify the health claims on any veterinary diet.

Take a close look at the ingredient list and ask your vet for evidence that the foods in the prescription diet are any better than most regular diets. Also please keep in mind that while your vet has the best intentions, they get little or no nutrition training and often what little training they do get comes from the very companies that are named in these lawsuits.

Ultra processed foods made with poor quality ingredients are not what your dog needs if they are suffering from an illness. Give your dog a fighting chance with fresh, quality foods for a long and healthy life.

This lawsuit was settled in July of 2021. Hills Pet Food paid $12.5 million to participants.

Is it any wonder that here at Lucky Dog Cuisine we believe wholeheartedly “Fresh is Better”
