Here are some disturbing facts concerning
Commercially Manufactured Pet Food:
U.S. Federal law PERMITS the sale of condemned meat as pet food.
Meat Byproducts - parts not fit for human consumption like feathers, feet, heads, ligaments, blood bones, intestines and diseased organs are considered PET GRADE.
Meat & "Meal" Products - processed at high temperatures that "denature" protein, meaning it DESTROYS the amino acids that make up protein. They are therefore poorly digested and provide little nutritive value.
Pet Food Providers turn slaughter house waste products into profits. Pet Food Manufacturers are not required to test raw materials.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website (AAFCO) defines Meat Meal as: "The rendered product of mammalian tissues, exclusive of any ADDED blood, hair, hide, trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents." This means all of the above can be present in the "meal" as long as the manufacturer doesn't add extra.

"Meat" Labeling - usually are poor quality scraps and include the small amount of meat left on the bone.
4-D Animals (Dead, Dying, diseased & Disabled) - these are banned from human consumption and are still legally allowed in pet food.
Rendering - is the process of taking meat and meat byproducts, including condemned meats, and cooking them at high temperatures. This is then processed at high temperatures. This is then processed to separate grease from raw materials. This material is finely ground and the end product is meat meal.
Condemned Grains - moldy grains (wheat, corn, etc.) are not fit for human consumption. They contain harmful myotoxins that end up in pet food.
Is it any wonder why so many dogs are now "allergic" to grains?
Of course your dog is safe, he only eats "Natural".
Are you sure about that?
AAFCO Definition of 'Natural'
'A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subject to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification, extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation but not having been produced or subject to chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as may occur unavoidably in good manufacturing processes'
So this means that 'rendering' is acceptable in this definition and is considered 'natural'!
Dead, diseased and dying are considered 'natural'. WHAT???????
Natural labels imply quality. BUT pet manufacturers are not required to test the raw materials they use so they could label a product as 'No added preservatives'. Keep in mind that they are starting with questionable ingredients.
Did you know that in some states companion animals are allowed in pet foods?
The picture to the right is a common sight at many rendering plants.
If you are feeding your dog a food with "meal" as one of the ingredients you may be unwittingly poisoning your dog.
- Bacteria (e-coli, salmonella, etc.)
- Drugs (Pentobarbital, etc.)
Also found in commercial dog foods:
Yes, your pet's foods are "fortified" with vitamins and minerals. It really means "added to" because the basic raw materials are so unwholesome. The quality of the raw materials is extremely variable and the harsh manufacturing processes destroy nutrients.
Did you know that after dry dog food goes through the extrusion process it has so little nutrients left that traditional commercial dog food manufacturers have to add vitamins and minerals back in to give it some form of nutritional value? In addition they spray it with the fat removed during the rendering process in order to make it palatable for the dog to eat. You should probably be wearing a contamination suit just handling the stuff, why let your dog eat it?
Is your dog a cannibal?
Persistent rumors that meat and bone meal contained euthanized animals prompted the FDA to do a study. The result showed that the euthanizing drug pentobarbital was found in pet food. It was found in Meat, Bone Meal and generic Animal Fat.
Quick (but still scary) Facts
- In the last forty years, since the proliferation of commercial dog food, dogs' life spans have shortened by roughly 18%
- Aside from automobile related accidents, cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs with roughly one in four dogs dying of cancer. When humans contract cancer one of the first forms of treatment is to remove all processed foods from their diet. You should do the same for your dog but don't wait until they get cancer. Feed whole foods today.
- Did you know that in the course of a year an average 50-pound dog will ingest about 18 pounds of preservatives when eating traditional commercial food?
Myth
Human food is bad for dogs.
Pet Food Companies want you to believe that.
Fact
